Nigerian Government Releases Funds For University Staff Salaries, Pensioners’ Benefits Amid Ongoing Strike  

The Nigerian government has initiated the release of funds to pay off outstanding salaries owed to Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) members of federal universities and to settle benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

The development came amidst an indefinite strike by the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU, which began on Monday over withheld salaries.

In a statement on Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), confirmed the commencement of payments, with several NASU members already reporting receipt.

The statement read, “The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities.”

It further stated, “According to the OAGF, the Federal Government has also released funds for payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector.”

The OAGF reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees.

Earlier, SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, highlighted that university executives, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, had gone without pay for four months, stating that universities would remain shut until all payments are fulfilled.
